Orthopedic Surgeons and Your Personal Injury Case | AICA Orthopedics If involved in a personal injury case, and damage has been caused to the musculoskeletal system, an orthopedic surgeon is called upon to assess your injuries to determine the intensity of the injury.

If the injury or injuries are severe, the orthopedic doctor will perform surgery so the patient can make a full recovery.

What Surgeries Do Orthopedists Perform?

  • A total joint replacement is when the surgeon assesses the damaged area and then replaces it with either metal or plastic parts. These parts are naturally shaped so that they fit accurately and improve the movements in patients with damaged joints.
  • Spinal fusion is when the surgeon joins two vertebrae in the spine by making a bridge between the two. This will prevent the stretching of the nerves as well as reduces the pain that the patient is experiencing. This is major surgery and typically lasts several hours.
  • With a total shoulder replacement, the damaged areas of the shoulder are replaced with metal or plastic implants. This will allow for a better range of motion as well as decrease the discomfort felt from the poor functioning shoulder.

Approaching A Personal Injury Suit

The orthopedic doctor serves as a personal injury doctor and relays information to the attorney handling the personal injury case. The doctor will share with the attorney what surgery may be needed as well as the length of the recovery process.

Diagnostic scans such as MRIs or CT scans may be ordered to help create a better picture of what is going on with the patient. At this stage, physical therapy may also be ordered based upon the results of the scan, as well as if surgery may or may not be needed.

Documentation is Critical

Finally, it is imperative that the orthopedic surgeon document each and every step that was taken to cure the patient. This documentation, known as a deposition, is essential as it will be used in court to assist the attorney in the personal injury case.
