What To Do About Delayed Back Pain After a Car Accident

Common Car Accident Back Injuries

Car accidents can result in a variety of back injuries, depending on the severity of the impact, the position of occupants inside the vehicle, and other factors. Here are some common back injuries that can occur in car accidents:

  • Whiplash: Whiplash is one of the most common car accident injuries and it can impact your head, neck, shoulders, and back. A whiplash injury occurs when the head and neck are forcefully jerked backward and then forward, causing neck muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the neck and upper back to become strained or sprained.
  • Herniated disc: A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc protrudes through the tough outer layer. The impact of a car accident can cause a disc to herniate, leading to pain, numbness, and weakness in the back, as well as pain that may radiate through the arms or legs.
  • Sprains and strains: Car accidents can cause stretching or tearing of ligaments, known as sprains, and injuries to muscles or tendons in the back, known as strains. These types of injuries can lead to pain, swelling, and reduced mobility.
  • Spinal fractures: The force of a high-impact collision can also cause fractures in the vertebrae of the spine. Fractures can range from hairline cracks to more severe breaks, and they can cause significant pain, limited mobility, and potential damage to the spinal cord.
  • Spinal cord injuries: In more severe accidents, damage to the spinal cord can occur. Spinal cord injuries can result in partial or complete paralysis, loss of sensation, and other serious complications, depending on the location and severity of the injury.

What Doctor to See for Car Accident Back Injuries

When it comes to seeking medical care for car accident-related back injuries, there are a few types of doctors you can work with for treatment. Visit an AICA Orthopedics car accident clinic near you to work with a team of car accident doctors who specialize in a wide range of treatments and services to provide you with comprehensive care.

Chiropractic Care for Car Accident Back Pain

Chiropractic care can be an effective option for addressing car accident-related back pain. Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, including injuries and pain in the back and spine. Chiropractors use a technique called spinal adjustments to treat back pain. Chiropractic adjustments involve applying controlled, gentle force to specific joints of the spine to improve alignment, reduce inflammation, and restore proper function to the nervous system. These adjustments can help alleviate back pain, improve mobility, and promote the body’s natural healing process.

Orthopedic Care for Car Accident Back Pain

Orthopedic care can also play a crucial role in the management of car accident-related back pain. Orthopedic doctors specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, including injuries to the back and spine. Orthopedic care for car accident back pain often begins with conservative, non-surgical treatment approaches, such as hot or cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and other modalities to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation in the affected area. In some cases, car accident-related back injuries may require surgical intervention. Orthopedic doctors are trained in performing various surgical procedures to address severe or persistent back pain.

Physical Therapy for Car Accident Back Pain

Physical therapy can be a valuable treatment approach for car accident-related back pain. Physical therapists are healthcare professionals who specialize in improving mobility, reducing pain, and restoring function through exercise, manual therapy, and other techniques. Physical therapy typically involves a range of therapeutic exercises to strengthen the muscles supporting the back, improve flexibility, and promote healing. These exercises may include stretching, strengthening, and stabilization exercises targeted to address the specific needs of your back injury. A car accident physical therapist will guide you through proper form and technique to maximize the benefits of treatment and minimize the risk of further injury.

Neurologists and Neurosurgeons for Car Accident Back Pain

Neurologists and neurosurgeons play essential roles in diagnosing and treating back pain from car accidents. Neurologists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. When it comes to car accident-related back pain, neurologists are skilled at evaluating the extent of nerve damage and identifying the specific cause of the pain. Neurosurgeons are specialized surgeons who focus on the surgical treatment of neurological conditions and are trained to operate on the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. They often come into play when there is a need for surgical intervention to address back pain caused by car accidents.

Navigating Car Accident Back Pain: Causes, Symptoms, and Healing Time

Why do I feel lower back pain after a car accident?

Experiencing lower back pain after a car accident is quite common. The forceful impact of a car wreck can result in various injuries to the muscles, ligaments, and discs in the lower back. Sprains, strains, herniated discs, or even fractures can occur, bringing about lower back pain.

Why do I feel upper back pain after a car accident?

Upper back pain following a car accident can have various causes. The impact of the collision can strain or sprain the muscles and ligaments in the upper back area. It can also lead to vertebral fractures or herniated discs in the thoracic spine. Additionally, the forceful jarring motion during the accident can contribute to whiplash, which may cause pain and stiffness in the upper back.

How long does back pain last after a car accident?

The duration of back pain after a car accident can vary depending on several factors, including the severity of the injury and individual differences in healing. In minor cases, back pain may resolve within a few days or weeks with conservative treatment options like rest, pain management, and physical therapy. However, more severe injuries like spinal fractures or herniated discs may require a longer recovery period.

Yesterday was my last day at AICA College Park since my accident in December, there is so much to say about the people who work here and the level of customer service, care, attention, friendliness, and overall amazing atmosphere that they provide. Location is perfect in College Park, right off the highway and in a small plaza with plenty of parking. The entire staff, from the front desk girls, to the physical therapy girls, to the chiros, and the medical team are AMAZING! I feel like I just lost my friends not being able to visit them twice a week every week. I will definitely miss coming here. All the smiles and warm welcomes received. The physical therapy - asking about my day, if everything is okay and helping my back and neck get better. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hector as my chiropractor, he is awesome, was very helpful in the healing process and also a native Spanish speaker which is a plus for those of us who do speak Spanish. Before coming to AICA, I tried another injury clinic in ATL and walked out after 5 mins - so impersonal and cold. I am so glad that I found AICA in College Park. Trust me, if you are injured and need some healing and TLC you NEED to come to this clinic! Highly recommend to everyone. Thank you again to the guys and girls at AICA - xo Ms. Colon
