Car Accident Prevention Tips For Teenage Drivers

Nov 17, 2017

The National Safety Council cites car accidents as the leading cause of death for teenagers throughout the United States. To help protect teenagers in Atlanta, AICA Orthopedics is offering tips that keep younger drivers focused on the road and free of distractions.

Car Accidents and Teenage Drivers

Teenagers are responsible for approximately 30 percent of all car accidents and 24 percent of all fatal crashes. In fact, one out of five drivers who receive their license at 16 years-old experience a car accident within their first year. If your teenager is involved in a car crash, contact our Atlanta Orthopedic Doctors or our car accident injury doctors for a complete examination and treatment.

AICA Orthopedics serves as the community’s most experienced car accident injury Orthopedic center, helping thousands of victims overcome their injuries using holistic solutions that work naturally with the body. We can help diagnose potential injuries and treat them at the source before they cause other chronic complications.

Car Accident Prevention Tips For Teenage Drivers

Consider the following tips that parents throughout Atlanta can use to help their children understand the magnitude of potential car accidents and how they can avoid such incidents.

Set A Curfew

Close to 40 percent of all car accidents occur at night. To avoid this, consider establishing a curfew that restricts unsupervised driving after 9:00 p.m. or earlier.

Limit The Number of Passengers

One passenger increases that odds of teenagers getting into a car accident by 50 percent, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Of course, the chances of a crash occurring increases substantially with more passengers. The National Safety Council advises restricting any passenger that is under the age of 18 during a teen’s first year as a licensed driver.

Ban Cell Phone Use

Approximately a quarter of all car accidents are associated with cell phone use. And, teens are more likely to use their smartphone devices while operating a vehicle than all other demographic. Parents should consider establishing restrictions around when their children can use their cell phones and set an example by not using them, too. The Department of Motor Vehicles offers a variety of mobile applications that parents can download to cut down on distractions to avoid car accidents.

Talk About The Consequences of Drinking and Driving

Close to a third of all teenage drivers who experience a fatal car accident had alcohol in their system. And, although Georgia has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drivers who consume alcohol, talking to your children about the consequences of driving under the influence can go a long way in preventing unnecessary accidents.
