Back Surgery Recovery

Back pain is prevalent among Americans because of the types of stress and strain most people are confronted with on a daily basis. The modern work space sees millions of Americans sitting down, hunched forward for long periods, while others experience back pain as a result of prior injuries or aging. Most cases of back pain are treatable through conservative methods like heat or physical therapy. In fact, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons reports that more than 90 percent of those who experience back pain are able to recover without surgical intervention. Still, if your condition requires surgery, it’s important to understand what the process looks like.

Recovering From Back Surgery

Your recovery rate is dictated by a variety of factors including your current health, weight, age, the extent of your condition or injury, and the type of surgery your condition requires. Consider the following information offered by our Atlanta Orthopedic Doctors to learn how you can help support your recovery and return to your routine sooner.

Stick To Your Doctor’s Post-Operation Recovery Program

Adhering to your doctor’s recovery program is the most effective way to experience a faster recovery after back surgery. Prior to your procedure, your doctor will draft a detailed recovery program that is considerate of expectations dedicated to pain management and a timeline for when you should be able to return to your favorite activities. There may be a number of temporary restrictions that seem problematic or intrude on your interests, but it is imperative that you do not overexert yourself to prevent further injury or pain. Your doctor’s recommendations are designed to give your body the time and rest it requires to completely heal.

Most patients who undergo back surgery are required to get plenty of rest, which may be difficult for those who enjoy an active lifestyle. For such people, it’s important to remember that allowing your body to heal over time is productive, although it may not seem like that. If your doctor’s recovery program includes the use of particular medications, make sure you understand when you need to take them and follow all directions.

Understand What Your Pain Indicates

Pain is a natural outcome of any surgery, but there are particular levels of pain that require specific actions. Before your surgical procedure takes place, ask your doctor what their expectations are for the type of pain you may experience. Understanding their expectations will help you know whether what you experience is normal or if it deserves medical attention.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Each person’s recovery time varies, but it’s safe to say that you will need to spend a significant time relaxing at home. This means that you should take proactive steps to prepare your home for a successful post-surgery experience. Consider moving your mattress to the floor and that your rest area is close to a kitchen and bathroom. You should also try to move your dishes and plates to the counter so that you do not need to reach up or overextend yourself.

Dedicate Yourself To Physical Therapy

Surgery is not the ultimate solution for treating back pain. After your surgery takes place, you will need to invest significant time in physical therapy. Physical therapy is meant to help your body recovery without any complications. Although the process can feel strenuous, it’s important to follow through with all of your therapist’s directions to experience a faster recovery time that’s free of relapses.

Yesterday was my last day at AICA College Park since my accident in December, there is so much to say about the people who work here and the level of customer service, care, attention, friendliness, and overall amazing atmosphere that they provide. Location is perfect in College Park, right off the highway and in a small plaza with plenty of parking. The entire staff, from the front desk girls, to the physical therapy girls, to the chiros, and the medical team are AMAZING! I feel like I just lost my friends not being able to visit them twice a week every week. I will definitely miss coming here. All the smiles and warm welcomes received. The physical therapy - asking about my day, if everything is okay and helping my back and neck get better. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hector as my chiropractor, he is awesome, was very helpful in the healing process and also a native Spanish speaker which is a plus for those of us who do speak Spanish. Before coming to AICA, I tried another injury clinic in ATL and walked out after 5 mins - so impersonal and cold. I am so glad that I found AICA in College Park. Trust me, if you are injured and need some healing and TLC you NEED to come to this clinic! Highly recommend to everyone. Thank you again to the guys and girls at AICA - xo Ms. Colon
