Orthopedic Injuries That Are Common In January

LinkedInFacebookInstagramXPinterestYoutube

Winter can be one of the best times of the year for individuals and families throughout Atlanta. Between the holidays and the opportunities that come with a new year, there are plenty of reasons to be excited during this season. However, winter also presents particular hazards that have the potential to cause physical harm. From icy surfaces to congested highways occupied by distracted drivers, orthopedic injuries can occur at any time.

Prevent Orthopedic Injuries

Understanding how to avoid or prevent common winter orthopedic injuries is vital. To reduce the chances of injuring yourself this winter, consider the following information provided by our experienced Atlanta Orthopedic Doctors.

Common Winter Accident Injuries

Snow and icy surfaces increase the chances of getting injured, regardless of what activity you’re performing. Something as basic as walking down Peachtree Street or driving to a relative’s house can lead to a variety of orthopedic injuries. In fact, our orthopedic doctors often help patients during the winter season who sustain:

  • Back injuries
  • Neck injuries
  • Bone fractures
  • Muscle strains or tears
  • Sprains
  • Spinal damage

Remaining focused on your surrounding environment and taking extra precautions are essential for remaining injury-free.

Causes of Injuries

Slipping On Icy Surfaces

Walking from your house to your vehicle is a basic part of your daily routine. Because of this, it’s easy to ignore the potential hazards associated with icy surfaces. What may appear as a wet spot on the ground can easily turn out to be black ice. Slippery surfaces are a common cause of various types of orthopedic injuries that include neck damage and bone fractures. Whenever you head outside, make sure to keep a close eye on the ground and walk carefully.

Car Accidents

The winter holidays and poor weather conditions cause over one million car accidents each year. If you aren’t able to stay home during an ice or snow storm, make sure to drive carefully and give yourself plenty of time to arrive to arrive at your destination. If you should hit a patch of ice, do not slam on your brakes. Instead, tap your brakes repeatedly while keeping both hands on the steering wheel to prevent sliding out of place. Car accidents can cause severe orthopedic injuries in a matter of seconds and the potential for sustaining permanent damage is high.

Yesterday was my last day at AICA College Park since my accident in December, there is so much to say about the people who work here and the level of customer service, care, attention, friendliness, and overall amazing atmosphere that they provide. Location is perfect in College Park, right off the highway and in a small plaza with plenty of parking. The entire staff, from the front desk girls, to the physical therapy girls, to the chiros, and the medical team are AMAZING! I feel like I just lost my friends not being able to visit them twice a week every week. I will definitely miss coming here. All the smiles and warm welcomes received. The physical therapy - asking about my day, if everything is okay and helping my back and neck get better. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hector as my chiropractor, he is awesome, was very helpful in the healing process and also a native Spanish speaker which is a plus for those of us who do speak Spanish. Before coming to AICA, I tried another injury clinic in ATL and walked out after 5 mins - so impersonal and cold. I am so glad that I found AICA in College Park. Trust me, if you are injured and need some healing and TLC you NEED to come to this clinic! Highly recommend to everyone. Thank you again to the guys and girls at AICA - xo Ms. Colon
