Jun 3, 2019

Q: Is there a right time for surgery?

A: When setting expectations around surgery, your orthopedic surgeon will know when is best based upon the amount of pain you are in and how your injury or pain is affecting your overall life. With all of that in mind, the surgeon will make the decision when the right time is.

Q: What happens post- op?

A: Common symptoms following orthopedic surgery will most likely be pain and swelling. As this is often expected by the orthopedic doctors, there will pain plans in place to manage pain accordingly especially for joint replacements and revision surgeries.

Q: What is the recovery process like following an orthopedic surgery?

A: Recovery will all depend upon the type of surgery you had and why you had the surgery as well as your current health status. Recovering from surgery can take a few days, a few weeks or even months to feel yourself again. Hospital stays can also vary from outpatient to a few nights stay in the hospital. Following your discharge from the hospital, you will work with a team of physical therapists either in your home or at a facility depending upon your level of mobility.

Q: Following surgery, will I be able to resume my normal routine?

A: The ultimate goal of surgery is for the patient to regain function and mobility without excess pain however there will be some limitations in the beginning to ensure the body is healing. With every surgery, limitations and restrictions will vary so speak with your physician to have a full understand of what to expect for your personal situation.

Q: What is a minimally invasive approach?

A: This type of approach allows medical professionals to use smaller incisions through the use of cameras to see on a larger scale without having to make larger cuts. This approach works similarly to a traditional approach but allow for:

  • Smaller incisions.
  • Less damage to surrounding muscles and tissues.
