Common Accident Injuries To Avoid This Winter Holiday Season

LinkedInFacebookInstagramXPinterestYoutube

No one wants to wind up in the hospital during the winter holidays. Still, accident injuries may be unavoidable depending on the circumstances. To help you enjoy this time of the year with your family and friends, our Orthopedic Doctors offer the following safety recommendations to keep in mind.

Holiday Season Accident Injuries

Some of the leading accident injuries that occur between November and January include:

Ladder Safety

You may not believe that ladders are anything to be cautious of considering how often you use one but close to 600,000 people are injured as a result of falling each year. Most of these accidents occur during the winter holiday season when conditions tend to be more slippery.

Before you hang up any lights in or around your home, make sure to inspect it for loose screws or weak rungs. You always want to use a ladder on a stable surface and make sure that someone is with you to hold it in place. When climbing up a ladder, go slow and do not overextend yourself once you reach the top.

Avoid Picking Up or Carrying Heavy Objects Without Support

There are over 80,000 injuries related to luggage each year. If you need to travel during the winter holidays, how you manage and carry your items can make a significant difference between maintaining your health or finding yourself in an emergency room. When packing, picking up, or carrying bulky items, make sure to:

  • Pack several light bags or suitcases rather than one massive suitcase
  • Stand alongside your bag when picking it up and bend at your knees. Do not try to lift heavy items with your hips or back.
  • When walking with a heavy item, try to keep it as close to your chest as possible.
  • Do not maintain a heavy item on your preferred shoulder and change sides often.
  • If you need to bring a wheeled suitcase up a flight of stairs, make sure to pick it up instead of dragging it to avoid falling backward.

Be Aware of Slippery Surfaces and Crosswalks

It’s easy to get distracted during the winter holidays, but it’s important to remain cautious of slippery conditions and crosswalks located near busy intersections. Although it may be tempting to run across a road to get to your next shopping destination quickly, try not to jaywalk to avoid getting hit by a distracted driver. It’s also a good idea to refrain from using a smartphone device when crossing a major highway or congested street.

Make sure to wear appropriate footwear based on the weather conditions and keep a close eye on the sidewalks you use. If you must walk across surfaces that contain ice, give yourself plenty of time and take smaller steps to avoid falling.

Yesterday was my last day at AICA College Park since my accident in December, there is so much to say about the people who work here and the level of customer service, care, attention, friendliness, and overall amazing atmosphere that they provide. Location is perfect in College Park, right off the highway and in a small plaza with plenty of parking. The entire staff, from the front desk girls, to the physical therapy girls, to the chiros, and the medical team are AMAZING! I feel like I just lost my friends not being able to visit them twice a week every week. I will definitely miss coming here. All the smiles and warm welcomes received. The physical therapy - asking about my day, if everything is okay and helping my back and neck get better. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hector as my chiropractor, he is awesome, was very helpful in the healing process and also a native Spanish speaker which is a plus for those of us who do speak Spanish. Before coming to AICA, I tried another injury clinic in ATL and walked out after 5 mins - so impersonal and cold. I am so glad that I found AICA in College Park. Trust me, if you are injured and need some healing and TLC you NEED to come to this clinic! Highly recommend to everyone. Thank you again to the guys and girls at AICA - xo Ms. Colon
