Bone Health and Pregnancy

Jan 19, 2018

Pregnancy provides both positive and negative effects on bone health. Because of this, it is imperative to understand how bones are impacted during this time and what preventative steps should be taken to avoid potential health complications for the mother and child alike.

Protecting Bone Health During Pregnancy

Research proves that pregnant women are able to absorb and digest calcium better than women who are not carrying a child. During the stages of pregnancy, the female body releases more estrogen, which supports calcium absorption and bone density. Such conditions help protect women from easily fracturing a bone in the event of a fall or accident.

How Breastfeeding Impacts Bone Health

For women who choose to breastfeed their babies, studies show a three to five percent depletion in bone mass. Although this loss can be recuperated once the mother stops breastfeeding, it does increase the chances of a fracture occurring during this time.

Foods Rich In Calcium

Pregnant women require more daily calcium intake to protect their bone health and ensure that their baby is developing appropriately. In fact, doctors recommend that pregnant women consume 1,000mg of calcium each day. Consider the following foods that are rich in calcium and can help you reach the daily requirement:

  • Green vegetables
  • Tofu
  • Almonds
  • Sardines
  • Broccoli
  •
Navy beans
  • Bok choy
  •
Rapini
  •
Figs
  • Watercress
  •
Milk
  •
Green beans
  •
Salmon
  • Spinach
  • Soy beans
  •
Sweet potatoes
  •
Black-eyed peas

How Exercise Impacts Bone Health

Just as your heart and muscles benefit from regular exercise, bones do, too. Pregnant women should incorporate low-impact exercises in their routines to help improve strength and density. And, regular exercise during pregnancy is also proven to help reduce back pain, improve digestion, prevent bloating, increase energy, and support healthy sleeping habits.
