Approaching Shoulder Surgery

Nov 7, 2018

Chances are if you have an impending shoulder surgery, the day of your procedure is at the forefront of your mind. Our Atlanta orthopedic doctors have most likely given you several pre-operative instructions for you to follow. It is imperative that these instructions are followed to the letter. It is equally important for you to continue all post-operative instructions as they are spelled out to you in order for you to have a successful surgery.

Preparing For Shoulder Surgery

Before you walk into the surgical suite on the day of your procedure, it is important that all of your questions have been answered and you are fully aware of everything you will encounter the day of and the following days afterward. At your pre-operative consultation with your physician, you should have a list of all of these questions and should take notes on their responses as it most likely will be an overwhelming process to go through.

You will be instructed to wear a sling after surgery to help immobilize your shoulder and arm. It is most likely that you will be wearing this sling for the majority of your day, depending on the type of shoulder surgery you underwent. You will have instructions on how to bathe, how to get dressed easily, and any restrictions you may have involving extending your arm. Sleeping with the sling on at night is also the best way to protect your shoulder, and although tempting, do not remove it unless otherwise instructed by your surgeon. Sleeping in a recliner may help you get comfortable enough to get some rest.

The hardest restriction that you will be given will be no driving. It is advisable to refrain from driving until you have been cleared at your post-operative appointment. The reason for this is you will most likely have limited mobility and thus limited control of the vehicle. You may also be taking prescription medication that can be dangerous for driving. Defer the decision to restart driving to your surgeon.
