A hip replacement can be nerve racking but also leaving you feeling hopeful for what’s to come. Our Atlanta orthopedics doctors are here to answer every question you may have every step of the way.

Although each person will recover differently, we can give you as much information as we can in regards to you personally and also what has worked best for others. It is our promise to you that we will explain to you what to expect before, during and after the surgery.

Expectations After A Hip Replacement

Following a hip replacement, you may be subjected to some limitations. If you drive on a regular basis you may find this task to be too daunting or your doctor will advise you not to for a period of time. Although this may be inconvenient for you it is best to listen to the advice your orthopedic doctor gives to ensure you heal properly.

After the surgery you will experience some discomfort and you may not be able to move or react as quickly, so operating a vehicle may not only be dangerous for you, but for others as well. When pressing on the brake or gas, following surgery, you may experience significant pain so waiting until after you have gone to physical therapy and advised by a doctor to drive, waiting is the safest option.

After surgery, you will also be given pain medicine to aid in alleviating pain which is another reason to avoid driving a vehicle. These medications are great in managing pain by hindering your ability to operate vehicles or other machinery. Pain medicine can affect people differently, while some may be fine, others may experience extreme tiredness or even hallucinations.

Keep in mind, although we advise against you driving we do not advise on you remaining stagnant. Reach out to friends and family and ask for them to drive you places so you can get exercise and take that new hip out for a spin. If your family is not close and that is not an option there is the possibility of your insurance company assisting with the cost of finding a driver for you to bring you to appointments.

Give Yourself A Chance To Take It Easy

Losing your independence may feel overwhelming, but keep in mind it is for a short time and the best thing you can do for your new hip is to listen to the advice from your physician as well as easing back into your lifestyle.
