Undergoing Spinal Decompression In Atlanta For Spinal Stenosis Patients

LinkedInFacebookInstagramXPinterestYoutube

Within the spine there are open spaces, and when these begin to shrink in size, nerves can become pinched resulting in excruciating pain in the lower back and even the legs. This condition is called spinal stenosis and can become debilitating if not treated. It can be caused from enlarged joints, ligaments that have increased in thickness as well as osteoarthritis.

Treating Spinal Stenosis

In order to treat this condition, a procedure called spinal decompression must be performed where the roof of the spinal canal is removed which, ultimately creates that needed space to reduce the symptoms. Spinal decompression in Atlanta is performed in four different ways.

  • A laminectomy is done to relieve the pressure off of the spinal cord by removing the bony lamina and thickened ligaments in the spinal canal. By removing these parts, extra space is created which will help manage the symptoms the patient is feeling.
  • A laminotomy is similar to that of a laminectomy but in this procedure, only part of the lamina is removed to relieve the patient of their discomfort.
  • When there is disc degeneration or pinching of the nerves, a foraminotomy approach may be used to provide the patient relief from their pain in the lower back and legs.
  • A laminoplasty is when the laminae is cut in the cervical area on one side which results in expansion in the spinal canal.

Are You A Candidate For Spinal Decompression In Atlanta?

If you are someone who suffers from pain or weakness in the leg or foot or have leg pain that becomes worse than your back pain, you may be considered a candidate for this surgery. If medication and physical therapy have not provided relief for your symptoms, surgery may be an option. Also, if your spinal stenosis is affecting your spinal canal, surgery may be suggested.

What To Expect After Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression surgery is extremely effective but recovery is not a sprint to the finish but rather a slow and steady pace. Patients can expect to see results within three months following surgery and can begin working their everyday regular activities back into their life with little to no pain.

With spinal decompression, the spine although little to no symptoms may be felt, still needs to be treated with care as it can longer undergo strenuous and vigorous pressure. Always follow-up with physical therapy as they will provide you with the type of exercises your body is capable of as well as strength building exercises.

Yesterday was my last day at AICA College Park since my accident in December, there is so much to say about the people who work here and the level of customer service, care, attention, friendliness, and overall amazing atmosphere that they provide. Location is perfect in College Park, right off the highway and in a small plaza with plenty of parking. The entire staff, from the front desk girls, to the physical therapy girls, to the chiros, and the medical team are AMAZING! I feel like I just lost my friends not being able to visit them twice a week every week. I will definitely miss coming here. All the smiles and warm welcomes received. The physical therapy - asking about my day, if everything is okay and helping my back and neck get better. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hector as my chiropractor, he is awesome, was very helpful in the healing process and also a native Spanish speaker which is a plus for those of us who do speak Spanish. Before coming to AICA, I tried another injury clinic in ATL and walked out after 5 mins - so impersonal and cold. I am so glad that I found AICA in College Park. Trust me, if you are injured and need some healing and TLC you NEED to come to this clinic! Highly recommend to everyone. Thank you again to the guys and girls at AICA - xo Ms. Colon
