At AICA, we are always looking for new ways to help our patients recover more fully after an accident. One advanced treatment we offer is called Manipulation Under Anesthesia, or MUA. This non-invasive procedure can be a game changer for patients who are still dealing with pain or stiffness after completing conservative care.
What Is MUA?
MUA is performed by a team that includes orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors, and anesthesiologists. While the patient is under light IV sedation, the care team gently mobilizes the body using advanced stretching and manipulation techniques. This helps reduce joint stiffness, increase flexibility, and break up scar tissue that may be limiting movement or causing discomfort.
Who Can Benefit?
MUA may be recommended for patients who:

Continue to experience pain after completing standard treatment
Are struggling with spine, shoulder, hip, or knee issues after an accident
Have limited mobility caused by joint or soft tissue restrictions
Because the patient is relaxed during the procedure, the care team is able to safely achieve more movement than is possible during a regular office visit.
Why It Matters?
MUA is often the next step for patients who are feeling stuck in their recovery. Most people notice increased range of motion immediately after the procedure. From there, our team builds a personalized rehabilitation plan to help maintain progress and reduce the chance of long-term complications. Since MUA is done on an outpatient basis, patients go home the same day and may avoid the need for more invasive procedures in the future.
If you are still in pain or not moving the way you used to, ask your AICA provider whether MUA could be right for you. We are here to support your healing every step of the way.
