Hip Pain Management Without Surgery

Mar 22, 2019

Picking up objects off the ground or even climbing the stairs can be a daunting tasks for those who suffer from hip pain. No one should have to suffer with pain, so when the pain becomes unmanageable, please seek help from a physician like our Atlanta orthopedic doctors who can help you manage your pain. Our orthopedic doctors will discuss suitable treatment plan that will work best for you.

Alternatives To Hip Surgery

Surgery should never be the first option as there are many non-invasive more natural approaches to manage the pain. Some of these are outlined below:

  • Medications: Medications are usually the first line of treatment for hip pain due to arthritis. Over-the-counter pain relievers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be recommended. If these fail to alleviate symptoms, your doctor may prescribe stronger NSAIDs. Drugs called DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) may be recommended for hip pain from rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Exercise: Exercise should be implemented into your daily routine as this can help strengthen muscles as well as improving flexibility in the hip. However, speak with your doctor before beginning a new exercise routine as some exercises may not be the most beneficial and could cause more pain.
  • Physical Therapy: During physical therapy, your therapist will work to strengthen and increase flexibility all while helping to improve your pain and regaining more function of your hip.
  • Weight Loss: AS the hips are weight bearing joints, when there is excessive weight bearing down on them, pain can increase. The added pressure of the weight makes activities like climbing stairs or other activities tedious therefore losing weight can help lessen the pain if you suffer from hip pain from arthritis.
  • Physical Aids: Braces and walkers can reduce the stress your hips are under if you suffer from arthritis in your hips. These aids are best for those who are at risk of falling or losing their balance. You can also use special aids to help you with certain activities such as reaching objects or putting on your shoes.
  • Injections: If your pain is intense even after medications and therapies, injections may be used to lessen the pain. corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid (viscosupplementation). Corticosteroids help reduce inflammation and hyaluronic acid helps improve the lubricative properties of joint fluid.
