How Can I Treat My Osteoarthritis?

LinkedInFacebookInstagramXPinterestYoutube

Osteoarthritis refers to articular cartilage that becomes worn down and creates an environment that makes joint motion painful. Although this condition occurs in various ways, most patients develop it as a result of aging, physical activity, genetics, blunt trauma, and leading a sedentary lifestyle. If you manage Osteoarthritis and are interested in treatment, contact our Atlanta Orthopedic Doctors to schedule a consultation.

Managing Osteoarthritis

Maintaining Healthy Weight

Keeping your body weight in check is critical when managing Osteoarthritis. If your condition applies to areas such as your knees, hips, spine, or ankles, losing weight if you are already obese or maintaining a healthy weight can help in relieving painful symptoms. Ask your Orthopedic Doctor for diet tips and advice if you are unsure how to create a well-balanced meal plan.

Medication

In some situations, medication can be prescribed to help address painful symptoms and inflammation. Medicines that are appropriate for treating Osteoarthritis include corticosteroids, which are administered through a shot to the affected joint(s).

Leading An Active Lifestyle

Maintaining an active lifestyle that consists of low-impact exercises is vital for those who suffer from Osteoarthritis. Following through with activities such as hiking, swimming, and pilates are excellent for staying fit without exposing your joints to significant levels of pressure. You may also want to consider physical therapy to alleviate mobility and flexibility concerns.

Surgery

Depending on the extent of your condition, you may not be able to address the symptoms of Osteoarthritis without surgery. Your Orthopedic Doctor will let you know their opinion of whether surgery is appropriate for your needs based on your age, conditioning, and family history. If they do recommend surgery for treatment, there are a few options to consider:

  • Total joint replacement: Replaces the damaged joint with an artificial one.
  • Joint fusion: Often used to address small joints located in the hand or foot, fusion connects the ends of two bones to prevent the affected joint from moving.
  • Osteotomy: This procedure helps relieve pressure from the damaged joint by realigning the bones in your leg.

Yesterday was my last day at AICA College Park since my accident in December, there is so much to say about the people who work here and the level of customer service, care, attention, friendliness, and overall amazing atmosphere that they provide. Location is perfect in College Park, right off the highway and in a small plaza with plenty of parking. The entire staff, from the front desk girls, to the physical therapy girls, to the chiros, and the medical team are AMAZING! I feel like I just lost my friends not being able to visit them twice a week every week. I will definitely miss coming here. All the smiles and warm welcomes received. The physical therapy - asking about my day, if everything is okay and helping my back and neck get better. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hector as my chiropractor, he is awesome, was very helpful in the healing process and also a native Spanish speaker which is a plus for those of us who do speak Spanish. Before coming to AICA, I tried another injury clinic in ATL and walked out after 5 mins - so impersonal and cold. I am so glad that I found AICA in College Park. Trust me, if you are injured and need some healing and TLC you NEED to come to this clinic! Highly recommend to everyone. Thank you again to the guys and girls at AICA - xo Ms. Colon
