Jun 4, 2018

When it comes to lower back pain, odds are that you’ve already experienced this or will at some point during your life. When back pain does appear, it can range from a dull ache to intense pain that prevents you from performing basic actions and activities such as standing up or walking.

Lower back pain is the primary cause of work disability and costs over 50 billion dollars to treat each year in the United States. Fortunately, most patients who suffer from lower back pain are able to experience a complete and healthy recovery through orthopedic treatment.

Causes of Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain can either appear suddenly, such as in the case of an accident, or it can be the result of stress that gradually develops over time. Most cases are caused by:

  • Weak core and back muscles
  • A sedentary or inactive lifestyle
  • Excessive weight and obesity
  • Twisting your body why carrying heavy objects
  • Lifting heavy objects incorrectly
  • Accidents

Lower Back Pain Prevention

Consider the following information that can help you avoid or prevent lower back pain:

  • Maintain an active lifestyle: Performing a variety of low-impact exercise activities each week is an excellent way to prevent back pain and support overall health. Try walking, swimming, or cycling three to four times each week to improve your muscle strength and coordination.

  • Take a yoga class: Yoga is phenomenal for strengthening back muscles and improving flexibility. It’s also helpful for improving personal posture.

  • Be aware of your posture: Hunching over while sitting or standing adds a tremendous amount of stress and pressure to your back muscles. To avoid lower back pain, make sure to pay attention to your posture and try to keep your back straight whenever sitting down or standing up.

Be careful when lifting heavy objects: Whenever you need to pick up heavy items, make sure to lift with your knees and to keep your back straight. Keep your items clutched closely to your chest and refrain from twisting your waist.
