Travel Tips To Avoid Back and Neck Pain

Jun 13, 2018

Summer is just about here…which means that vacation season is arriving! With vacationing comes long flights and car rides. For those who suffer from chronic neck or back pain, traveling for hours at a time can be unbearable.

So, how do you enjoy your vacation without suffering in constant pain or discomfort? Our Atlanta orthopedic doctors are providing a variety of helpful tips for avoiding or managing neck and back pain while traveling this summer.

Traveling Without Pain

Although you may not have a problem traveling by plane or car, remaining sedentary in small, cramped settings adds a significant amount of stress and pressure to your joints. To avoid this, consider:

Contacting the Airline Ahead of Time

Before you purchase your tickets, consider calling your desired airline to learn more about how they may be able to accommodate for neck and back pain. If necessary, ask your primary physician to provide a written notice that you can show to prove your condition. If your condition or pain is too great to travel comfortable, make sure to ask for the following services:

  • Wheelchair transportation to and from your plane
  • Shuttle transportation between terminals
  • Luggage support and transportation
  • Gate passes for non-flying family members

Pack Appropriately

Carrying heavy luggage and packing improperly are the two largest contributors to back and neck pain for travelers. Try to pack light or split up your belongings into multiple bags. When lifting or loading your luggage into an overhead compartment, remember to lift with your legs and to keep your back straight at all times.

Drink Plenty of Water

Plans are notorious for their dry air and dehydrating environment. To avoid muscle pain, considering purchasing a large bottle of water before entering your plane.

Pay Attention to Your Posture

If you are traveling by car, make sure to keep a close eye on your posture. Raise your seat high enough so that your knees align directly with your hips to eliminate pressure from your lumbar spine.

Adjust For Maximum Lumbar Support

In most modern vehicles, seats are equipped with built-in lumbar support. Make sure to adjust your seat so that your lower back has plenty of cushion and is set in a locked, upright position.

Allow Yourself to Make Plenty of Stops

If you are not in a rush to arrive to your destination, it’s always a good idea to make frequent stops to stretch and walk around. Studies prove that stretching for several minutes each hour helps stimulate blood flow and prevent inflammation, muscle spasms, and cramps.

Speak With Your Orthopedic Doctor

Before you leave for vacation, don’t forget to speak with your orthopedic doctor. They can provide additional recommendations for avoiding pain during your travels, as well as connect you to a chiropractor for an adjustment.
